This is the big five safari destination in Rwanda. Though Rwanda is commonly known for its Gorilla Trekking safaris, Akagera offers the perfect opportunity to sight other wildlife interests. It’s sits on an area of 100, 000 hectares and borders Tanzania.

Akagera comprises of savannah grasslands, open plains, lakes, low mountains and swamps. It is therefore home to a large biodiversity of wildlife and avifauna.  Among the species to see in Akagera include Hippos In their large numbers, gigantic crocodiles, the sitatunga and shoebill on the wetlands. This is inclusive of the big five which roam this free plains.

Akagera boasts a large number of birdlife. This include the colorful barbets, Turacos, parrots and rollers.  You can also be lucky to see the black headed gonolek.  Adding the big five safaris at Akagera is a great addition to the Gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes.

Accommodation in Virunga includes the beautiful and intimate Magashi camp set at the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga. Ruzizi tented camp is an Eco lodge that promotes sustainable tourism.  Activities at Akagera include night game drives, boat rides, and community activities with the rangers and fishing.
The best time to visit is during the dry season between June and September. It’s the best time for game viewing. Wildlife is widespread at this time of the year all over the park and around the water bodies.
